Looking for the third alternative
Mikael wants to get on with his life, and anxiously waits for the last stage of his second gender reassignment process. Orlando has already had his. The two men are very different; where Mikael wants to live his life as a regular man, Orlando thinks of himself as a representative of the third gender. Both their lives have, since youth, been lead by a profound need to be loved, and the sorrow caused by the difficulty of finding that love as a man, whom the society shuns and despises. Both are now over sixty and still looking for a place to call their own in the constrictive system of gender roles.
In this documentary Orlando and Mikael, directed by Marcus Lindeen, interview each other about their decisions. Their active knowledge of being filmed gives the audience a way to become a part of the conversation, without feeling like a voyeur – Orlando and Mikael are not some phenomena to be studied, but the narrators of their own stories, strong and interesting people.
