10. Heinäkuuta 1969 valmistaudutaan ihmisen ensiaskeliin kuun kamaralla. Montrealissa elämä on kuitenkin paljon monimutkaisempaa. Kahden vuoden ajan sacha on elänyt suloisessa itsepetoksessa, vapaana äitinsä estherin odotuksista. Äiti jäi kotiin belgiaan, kun Sacha lähetettiin kanadaan opiskelemaan lääkäriksi, mutta tyttöpä lopettikin lääketieteellisen kesken keskittyäkseen valokuvausopintoihin. Ja kuten Esther olettaakin, Sachalla on salainen rakkaus. Mutta se ei olekaan vävypoika ja tuleva aviomies, vaan kaunis nainen, Odile.

Hiljalleen Odile alkaa saada tilanteesta tarpeekseen ja esittää Sachalle uhkavaatimuksen: kerro vanhemmillesi totuus, ennen kuin kuulento on laskeutunut, tai... Aika alkaa käydä vähiin, ja Sacha palaa vastentahtoisesti brysseliin kertoakseen salaisuutensa perheelleen, joka mieluiten pitäisi luurangot kaapissa. Ei silti, ettäkö Sachan tunnustus olisi muutenkaan helppo: heikkohermoinen äiti sairastaa syöpää, isän liiketoimet eivät suju odotusten mukaan, sisko on katkeroitunut kääpiö, joka juttelee kultakalalleen. Edes isoäidillä ei ole puhtaat jauhot pussissa.

Upean debyyttiohjauksen takaa löytyy chris vander stappen, joka on jo niittänyt "piireissä" mainetta Ma Vien En Rose -elokuvan käsikirjoittajana. Esikoiselokuvassaan hän tarkastelee charmantin kevyesti seksuaalista identiteettiä ja perheen dynamiikkaa. Heinäkuun 20. päivä astronautit loikkivat vihdoin kuun pinnalla - samaan aikaan maassa Sachan perhe tekee myös löytöretkiä.

The year is 1969, and on July 10th man is preparing to walk on the moon. Meanwhile, in montreal, life is far more complicated. For two years Sacha has been living a blissful lie, free from the epectations of her mother Esther. While mum stayed in Belgium, Sacha was sent to canada to study medicine, but she promptly dropped out to devote herself to studying photography. As her mother suspects, she does indeed have a secret love. However, it is not a future son-in-law and husband, but a beautiful woman, Odile. Slowly but surely odile is grows tired of being kept a secret, and she finally makes an ultimatum to Sacha: tell your parents before the astronauts land on the moon, or else...

Time is running short, and Sacha reluctantly returns to Bruxelles to share her secret with the family, who would rather keep the skeletons (and Sacha) in the closet. Not that it would be easy to explain things to them anyway: her high-strung mother suffers from cancer; the father's business is not doing as well as expected; her sister is an embittered midget who talks to her goldfish. And with regard to grandmother - there is more than meets the eye.

Family pack is an awesome directorial debut by Chris Vander Stappen, whom "those in the know" well remember for her screenplay to ma vie en rose. In her first movie she gives us a delicate depiction of sexual identity and family dynamics. On the 20th July the astronauts finally land on the moon - back on earth Sacha's family is also exploring some unfamiliar territory of their own.
